Black Marlin is a migratory fish. Black Marlin usually lives in tropical and subtropical waters in the Indo-Pacific region. Black marlin are also found in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Those who find their way to the Atlantic Ocean take the route via the Cape of Good Hope .


Black or blue marlin are some of the fastest swimmers on Earth , often reaching speeds of up to 80 mph (130 km/h). Thus, marlin fish are considered the fastest marine creatures ever.


Black marlin are commercial fish because they are constantly exposed to fishing. They are strong, large fish, expensive, and rich in nutrients and distinctive taste.

Black marlin is a large fish. Male black marlin reach a maximum size of 15.3 feet, while female black marlin are larger than males.


Male black marlin weigh about 750 kg. While female marlin weigh about 1,000 pounds.


Marlin fish vary in color from black to dark blue. This species has a dark blue dorsal (upper) side. The belly area tends to be silvery white, the back side of the Black Marlin being slate blue.


The body of the black marlin is large, bony. They have a long, sword-like snout. The body shape of the marlin is similar to that of a space rocket, and the marlin has two dorsal fins and two fins at the bottom, while the black marlin has a sharp, sword-like upper jaw that is long and prominent, which it uses to cut up its prey.


Black marlin usually tend to stay in shallow waters, where they reside close to the seashore. Since this species belongs to the Pacific region, it is found near islands and coral reefs. These fish never swim below 30 meters depth.


Marlin fish mainly feed on various types of marine animals and small fish such as dolphin fish, squid, octopus, mackerel, trevally and swordfish. Black Marlins prefer to feed on small tuna when the latter are abundant.


This marlin fertilizes externally and spawns at temperatures ranging from 27 to 28 degrees Celsius. A pregnant female has the capacity to carry 40 million eggs.
